A browser-based binaural brainwave entrainment engine. It plays a pair of tones — one per ear — with a precise frequency gap between them; the brain perceives the difference as a third “phantom” tone and tends to synchronise its electrical activity to it, an effect called the frequency following response. A step sequencer shifts that target frequency over the course of a session, and layered ambient soundscapes sit on top.
The binaural beat effect was first documented by the Prussian physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839. Biophysicist Gerald Oster formalised its use in research with the 1973 Scientific American paper “Auditory Beats in the Brain.” The idea of a procedural engine — chaining and stacking shifting states rather than holding one static frequency, and masking the raw tones under ambient sound — follows the approach Robert Monroe and his institute have used in commercial entrainment programs since the 1970s. Auditory masking. On their own the carriers are sterile sine tones, and if the analytical mind keeps tracking them it stays alert — which defeats the purpose. A shifting, organic soundscape over the top gets labelled as safe background noise and tuned out (habituation), while the brainstem keeps processing the frequency difference underneath. Turn the binaural layer down until it sits just under the ambience and the conscious mind lets go while entrainment continues.
A slow phase-sweep between the two carriers. As they drift toward and away from each other their waves alternately reinforce and partially cancel, so the sound swells and recedes — an ocean wave that never breaks, or a jet passing overhead and back. Because it never resolves, the mind stops predicting an ending and leans into it, and the moving texture avoids the auditory fatigue a raw sine tone causes.
A vocalised drone layer for the opening phase of a session — a deep, echoing hum to breathe along with. It’s a preparation step: slow the breath, lower the heart rate, settle mental chatter before the main program begins. It can be toggled per sequencer step.
Yes — delta, theta and alpha are concurrent and independent, each with its own level. Stacking delta and theta is the common approach for a body-asleep, mind-awake state.
Load the LUCID preset, or set the four steps manually: (1) theta entry, ~10 min, with Resonant Tuning on; (2) theta + delta together, ~15 min, binaural low and ambience high; (3) theta held for the dreaming window, longer duration; (4) alpha to surface gently. Give each step a 15–60 second crossfade.
They set the spacing of the three stacked carriers over the 110 Hz anchor: A Octave (clean, neutral default), B Harmonic (odd harmonics, more complex), C Fifth (Pythagorean, warm), D Solfeggio (110 · 396 · 528 Hz).
Yes. The effect depends on each ear receiving a different frequency, so the console uses a hard-panned stereo bus. Speakers won’t produce it.
